State Representative Brian Stewart of Ashville has put forward a legislative proposal aimed at safeguarding student-athletes entering into name, image, and likeness (NIL) contracts. The proposed bill seeks to prevent agents from binding student-athletes in NIL agreements that extend beyond their collegiate eligibility. Additionally, it prohibits terms in such agreements that would impact athletes' earnings after they have completed college.

Stewart emphasized the importance of these protections by stating, "It’s important that we have safeguards in this name image likeness era that protect the future earning capabilities of student athletes who move on to play sports professionally." He noted that similar issues have arisen in other states and described this legislation as a proactive measure to avert potential problems in Ohio.

The National Football League Players Association (NFLPA) has expressed its support for Stewart's initiative. In a statement, the NFLPA remarked, "The NFLPA commends the efforts of Representative Stewart in introducing this NIL legislation. Advocating for player protections is the foundation of our Union, and the player protections included in this legislation will help keep college athletes from predatory contracts and bad actors."

Currently, the legislation is awaiting assignment of a bill number and referral to a committee for further consideration.
