State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) has introduced a resolution urging Congress to pass the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act.
Introduced in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, the SAVE Act aims to protect and preserve the right of American citizens to vote by requiring states to obtain proof of citizenship when an individual registers to vote. Additionally, it mandates that states remove non-citizens from existing voter registries.
“It is critical that Congress act now to uphold the sacred right and responsibility of American citizens to vote,” Richardson stated. “Across the country, this right is being infringed upon by allowing non-citizens to vote in our elections and influence the results. This not only threatens the rights of our constituents but also the integrity and security of our beloved nation.”
To prove their citizenship, individuals can provide various documents including a U.S. passport, military ID card, government-issued ID card, certified birth certificate, adoption decree, Naturalization Certificate or American Indian Card issued by the Department of Homeland Security.
The resolution, H.C.R. 18, has not yet been assigned to a House committee.
