State Representative Tracy Richardson of Marysville has introduced House Bill 117, known as the 'Pledge of Allegiance Act,' aimed at ensuring all K-12 students in Ohio have the opportunity to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. The bill was presented with sponsor testimony.

Representative Richardson stated, "HB 117 promotes patriotism and civic engagement while protecting individual and constitutionally guaranteed rights." She added that reciting the pledge builds nationalism and unity by reaffirming commitment to American values. "We live in the greatest country in the world and the Pledge of Allegiance helps to remind us of this," she said.

House Bill 117 includes several key provisions:

- Adoption of Policy: School districts will be required to establish a policy for daily recitation of the Pledge.

- Constitutional Protections: Participation is not mandatory, safeguarding individuals' constitutional rights.

- Integrity of the Pledge: Schools must adhere to the official wording as per 4 U.S.C. 4.

- Encouragement of Civics Education: The bill encourages lessons on understanding the American flag and pledge to promote citizenship skills.

- Transparency and Accessibility: Districts must make their policies publicly available online if possible.

The bill is pending further review by a committee.
