State Representative Brian Stewart (R-Ashville) has announced the passage of House Bill 305 in the Ohio House of Representatives. The bill is aimed at modernizing judicial processes across the state by mandating Clerks of the Court to allow electronic filing within nine months of enactment.

Stewart emphasized the importance of adapting to technological advancements in conducting business, including within the justice system. "The internet is used to do virtually all other types of business in Ohio, and residents should be permitted to utilize this technology in our justice system as well," he said. Furthermore, Stewart highlighted the economic benefits of such a move, stating that "E-filing reduces litigation costs for individuals and businesses who have matters before the Court and is a reasonable service that government should make available to our taxpayers."

According to a press release, House Bill 305 mandates electronic filing for court documents by Clerks of the Court of Common Pleas and Municipal Courts within nine months from its enactment. The bill has gained support from various legal entities including the Ohio State Bar Association, the Ohio Clerk of Courts Association, and the Municipal Court Clerks Association.

The press release also stated that this legislation ensures equality in current computerization fees levied by clerks for new case filings. This guarantees that local offices will have sufficient funds for system implementation without requiring additional appropriations from the Ohio General Assembly.

Finally, according to the press release, House Bill 305 received unanimous approval and is currently awaiting deliberation in the Ohio Senate. If passed, it will advance to the next stage of legislative process.
