Residents from Leesburg, Claiborne, and Taylor Township in Union County came together on September 25th to voice their strong opposition to the proposed Samsung solar project. The meeting, attended by approximately 300 residents, lasted over two hours as concerns were raised about the potential negative impacts of the project.
During the gathering, residents expressed a range of concerns, including the long-term negative health outcomes that could result from the construction of the solar project. They also highlighted the potential destruction of drainage tiles and the increased risk of flooding in the area. The elimination of important fertile farmland was another key concern, as well as the negative aesthetics and potential impact on property values.
Furthermore, residents raised questions about the reliability and certainty of the project's electricity generation, as well as the long-term restoration of the land to farmland once the project is completed. The presence of almost 9000 acres of prime farmland already under construction or pending in Union County raised further doubts about the necessity of the Samsung solar project.
One resident summarized the sentiments of the meeting, stating, "We are not happy with this project. Our concerns are legitimate, and we expect them to be taken seriously." The residents are determined to continue advocating against the project in the coming months, ensuring that their objections are heard.
In response to the concerns raised, the Chair of the Power Sitting Board is urged to fully consider the objections of the constituents. The representative of the residents stated, "I will happily address any of your questions and respectfully request your full and fair consideration of the objections of my constituents."
As the debate surrounding the Samsung solar project in Union County continues, it is clear that the concerns of the residents must be taken into account. The long-term impacts on health, farmland, and property values cannot be ignored, and a thorough evaluation of the project is necessary to ensure the best outcome for the community.
