Monday, the Malone University baseball team wrapped up their first Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) series of the season with a doubleheader at Ohio Dominican University.

The Pioneers cruised to an 11-6 win in the first game, but the Panthers rallied back for a 9-2 win in game two.

With Monday's results, the teams finish the season series split at two games each.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • Game 1: Malone 11 - Ohio Dominican 6
  • Game 2: Ohio Dominican 9 - Malone 2
  • Records: Malone (11-7, 2-2 G-MAC) | Ohio Dominican (8-10, 2-2 G-MAC)
  • Location: Columbus, Ohio | Frank Damian Field at Panther Valley
GAME ONE

Malone's offense exploded for seven runs in the top of the first inning. The Pioneers used five hits and four errors by ODU to grab the early 7-0 lead.

JC Philippi, Jeremy Tonelli, and Allen Diaz all had RBIs in the inning.

Those seven runs would have been enough run support for the combination of Michael Cook and Allen Laytart who limited the Panthers to just six runs for the entire game.

However, the Pioneers added a run in the fourth inning on a RBI double by Jake Aleman. MU also got a pair of insurance runs in the seventh inning on base hits by Tonelli and Diaz.

GAME TWO

In the second game of the day it was the Panthers who used one big inning to help secure the win.

With the game tied at 1-1 in the 4th, ODU scored six runs on five hits to move ahead 7-1.

Malone got one run back on a RBI double by Isaiah Miller in the sixth, but the Panthers responded with two more in their half of the inning.

In the end ODU was able to hold on through the late innings for the 9-2 win.

DETAILS

  • Michael Cook earned the win on the mound in the first game. It is his first win of the 2023 season.
  • Jeremy Tonelli paced Malone's offense on the day by going 3-6 at the plate. He had 4 RBIs and also scored a pair of runs.
  • Tyson Gingerich also notched three hits in the doubleheader. He continues to lead the G-MAC in batting average at .478.
