In partnership with the non-profit Tree-Plenish, students at Shawnee High School will plant saplings in the yards of local residents in order to offset their school’s energy consumption. Students invite you to partner with them by ordering a sapling or by volunteering on the day of the event.
Throughout the year, students have been working hard to plan this tree-planting event. Under the direction of Environmental Science Teacher Elizabeth Allen, students have calculated how much carbon the school emits during an academic year and converted the amount into a number of saplings. Their goal is to plant 900 saplings.
“We often focus on the negative environmental problems in our world,” said Allen. “With this project, I want to share something positive with students that will encourage them to get out into the world to be a part of the solution.”
The students are working to market the event to their local community by encouraging residents to order saplings for their property. On the day of the event, volunteer teams will plant saplings in the yards of residents who requested them.
“Planting trees is a small act that can have a big impact not only on our environment but also on each of the students who participate in the event,” said Allen.
The students are hosting this event in partnership with Tree-Plenish, a student-led 501(c)(3) non-profit organization empowering students to create a more sustainable and equitable future through community tree planting. Together with students from Clark-Shawnee, Tree-Plenish hopes to drive Springfield toward a sustainable future.
The community-wide planting event will take place on May 6, 2023, from 9:00 AM - 12:00 noon. Saplings will be available for purchase through April 6, 2023.
