Shawnee High School and Middle School will update its exterior wall signage to reflect that the building now houses both the middle school and the high school. The new signage will also feature the district’s golden block-S logo with Shawnee feathers.
This new signage is part of the district's ongoing efforts to update the facilities while preserving the district’s history.
“The building signage was not called out by the state to be updated through the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission (OFCC) building project, so we are tackling that project now,” said Superintendent Brian Kuhn. “Last school year we updated the yard sign, and this year we are refreshing the exterior wall signage, so anyone visiting the school knows that it is both Shawnee High School and Shawnee Middle School.”
The goal in removing the Shawnee Brave is to preserve and maintain the district's long-standing traditions and history. The Shawnee Brave was removed from the building intact and is proudly on display inside the high school and middle school North Gym for decades to come.
“When we looked at adding the ‘Middle School’ lettering, we discovered that the Shawnee Brave signage was deteriorating due to weather exposure over the years,” explained Kuhn. “Updating our signage presented an opportunity for us to preserve this treasured Shawnee symbol by removing it from the exterior where it is exposed to the elements and redisplaying it inside the building.”
The new lettering and the district’s golden block-S logo with Shawnee feathers will be added to the exterior of the building in the weeks to come.
In 2017, the Middle School moved into its own wing in the Shawnee High School building. Prior to this, seventh and eighth grade students attended middle school at the district's primary school buildings. The 2017-2018 school year marked the first year that middle and high school students were under the same roof. Renovations at Shawnee High School and Middle School were completed in the fall of 2020.
