The Malone University women's basketball team hosted Walsh University on Thursday evening for the 27th Annual Mayors' Cup in a crosstown Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) game.

While the Pioneers jumped out to an early lead, the Cavaliers took a small lead by halftime.

The second half saw the visitors outscore the home team 44-32 to secure the Mayors' Cup trophy.

THE ESSENTIALS

  • Final Score: Walsh University 82 – Malone University 67
  • Records: Walsh (6-9, 4-4 G-MAC) | Malone (11-5, 5-3 G-MAC)
  • Location: Canton, Ohio | Osborne Hall
THE GAME

Brooklyn Troyer started off the night with a three-pointer on the opening possession. On a fastbreak layup, Emma Kallas gave Malone their largest lead of the night at 9-2.

The second part of the first quarter saw the teams go back and forth down the court. Alexis Hutchison and Erin Kaufman were both big contributors in this effort. The first period ended with Emma Kallas sinking an 'and one' opportunity to give Malone a four point lead.

The second quarter quickly started with Walsh closing that gap, but the teams once again traded baskets.

At the 2:52 mark, the Cavaliers earned a five point lead before Troyer hit back-to-back three-pointers.

However, the effort was later lost, as that would be the Pioneers final lead of the night.

Walsh carried a 38-35 lead into the halftime locker rooms, and quickly expanded their lead to ten points after the teams hit the court again.

A three-pointer from Hutchison got Malone the closest they would come in the third quarter. However, within that third quarter, Erin Kaufman sank four free throws and Brooklyn Troyer added two of her own. Kallas closed out the third quarter with a layup.

While the crowd in the packed Osborne Hall had fallen quiet with the score, Brooklyn Troyer got everyone on their feet with her deep three-pointer to open the fourth quarter after the Pioneers had multiple offensive rebounds on their opening possession.

Kaufman scored her 18th point of the night with 3:13 left in the game with a layup. At the 1:03 mark, Hutchison passed the ball to Kyli Horn who sank a shot from beyond the arc for the final Pioneer points of the night.

Sadly, the Walsh offensive front was too much for Malone as the Cavaliers outscored the Pioneers in the second half, and never let the home team have the advantage on the scoreboard after halftime.

Following the game, the Cavaliers were presented with the Mayors' Cup trophy.

THE DETAILS

  • Alexis Hutchison led the Pioneers with 19 points, a team-high 5 assists, and two steals.
  • Freshman Erin Kaufman scored her fifth double-double with her 18 points and game-high 12 rebounds. She also snagged two steals.
  • Brooklyn Troyer sank four three-pointers on her way to 16 points.
  • Emma Kallas had nine points and seven rebounds.
  • The Pioneers slightly outscored the Cavaliers with their seven second chance points to the visiting team's six.
