Three local citizens have been designated Luminaries by the Board of Clark County Commissioners for their efforts in shining a positive light on the community.
The Clark County Luminaries – Springfield resident Patty Gentry Young and New Carlisle residents Kim and Scott Griffith – will be formally honored during a board meeting in December.
The Luminaries program was created by commissioners in 2018 to celebrate people making a difference in their community.
Patty Gentry Young, the owner of Young Hair, Inc., has worked tirelessly to raise cancer awareness for minorities in Clark County. She volunteered with the American Cancer Society’s “Look Good, Feel Better” program, which helped people with cancer deal with the appearance side effects of cancer treatment. Young is also the co-founder and president of Sisters United for Prevention, an organization dedicated to raising cancer awareness in Clark County. Young’s organization hosts an annual Cancer Awareness Event and Style Show on Mother’s Day, which honors cancer survivors in our community. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Young and her salon also scheduled hundreds of vaccine appointments for minorities in Clark County.
“Patty never misses an opportunity to make someone feel valued and beautiful, no matter what they're going through in their life,” said Clark County Commissioner Melanie Flax Wilt. “She shares her gifts selflessly throughout the community, and does it with style!”
Scott and Kim Griffith, the former owners of seven Lee’s Famous Recipe Chicken restaurants in the region, have served the community for more than four decades. The Griffiths have been involved in more than 30 local organizations, including New Carlisle Rotary and Salvation Army. The Griffiths also helped create the Western Clark County Business Association, which is now known as the Gateway Business Group, and the Champion City Contacts chapter of the Business Network International, to help connect hundreds of small business in Clark County with mentoring and networking events. They also played a key role in supporting the New Carlisle Heritage of Flight Festival
“I’m proud to know them and consider them friends,” said Commissioner Lowell McGlothin. “They’ve been so supportive of not just New Carlisle, but all of Clark County.”
The Luminaries will be honored during the Clark County Commission meeting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7 at the Springview Government Center in Springfield.
