Shawnee senior RJ Griffin was recognized as the Penn Station Athlete of the Month for November 2022. Penn Station representatives along WDTN 2 News, attended the Shawnee High School Pep Rally on Thursday to honor Griffin and present him with the award. Griffin is a student-athlete at Shawnee High School who participates in football and basketball.
“RJ is an outstanding student-athlete at Shawnee,” said Varsity Basketball Head Coach Chris McGuire. “He excels on the football field, basketball court, and in the classroom. His commitment and dedication to his teammates, coaches, and academics is second to none. RJ is a tremendous asset to the Shawnee community and will be very successful after graduation.”
According to their website, the Penn Station’s Athlete of the Month Award seeks to recognize “our next generation of leaders” who have “demonstrated excellence in athletics and good citizenship.”
Shawnee High School students, staff, and administrators gathered at the end of the school day on Thursday, October 27, for a Glow in the Dark Pep Rally to honor Griffin’s achievements and enter the contest for a $2,500 School Spirit Award.
WDTN 2 News Sports Director, Jack Pohl, interviewed Griffin and presented him with the Penn Station Athlete of the Month Trophy as Shawnee high schoolers showed off their Braves Spirit. The Pep Rally featured the Shawnee High School Marching Band, Color Guard, and cheerleaders. The segment will air on WDTN at 6 pm on Tuesday, November 1, 2022.
The Penn Station Athlete of the Month Award is open to all senior athletes in the Dayton-Springfield area and only eight athletes are selected each year.
In addition to being featured on WDTN, Penn Station Athletes of the month receive a $250 donation to their high school in the winner’s name, a “Party of 10” Gift Certificate redeemable at any Dayton area Penn Station, an Athlete of the Month T-shirt, an Athlete of the Month Trophy, and an in-store display featuring the student’s profile.
Each Athlete of the Month is also entered into the Penn Station Athlete of the Year contest for a chance to win a $10,000 college scholarship. The Athlete of the Year will be announced at the end of the school year.
