DEERWESTER HONORED BY 2023 NATIONAL MERIT® SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM AND ROTARY CLUB OF SPRINGFIELD

Shawnee High School Principal, Chad Mossing, announced that Sara Deerwester has been named a Commended Student in the 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program. A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC®), which conducts the program was presented by Mossing to this scholastically talented senior.

“Out of the 1.5 million entrants, less than five percent of the students receive this recognition,” said Mossing. “Sara has worked hard for this honor and we are proud of her commendation and her academic achievements.”

Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 students who entered the 2023 competition by taking the 2021 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®). Only 34,000 students throughout the nation are recognized as Commended Students for their exceptional academic promise.

''Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success," commented a spokesperson for NMSC. ''We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success."

Deerwester was also recognized as Rotary Club of Springfield Student of the Month. She was invited to attend four Rotary meetings where she will learn more about the Rotary Club of Springfield, its members, and the work the club does to strengthen the community. Additionally, Deerwester will have the opportunity to hear from a variety of speakers that present at the weekly meetings and network with community members.
