Pickaway County has become one of the first counties in Ohio to implement the Local Option Homestead Tax Exemption, according to an announcement from State Representative Brian Stewart (R-Ashville). The exemption is a provision in House Bill 96, the state’s operating budget, and allows county commissioners to offer a property tax exemption that supplements the existing state homestead exemption.
The Pickaway County Commissioners approved the measure on October 14. The new exemption is expected to provide more than $1.1 million in property tax relief to county residents, averaging $349 per eligible home.
“I was proud to fight for meaningful property tax relief in the state budget process as Chairman of the Finance Committee, including the first-ever local, permissive homestead exemption option for counties,” said Rep. Stewart. “I commend my friends Commissioner Wippel, Commissioner Henson, and Commissioner Scherer for their leadership in using this new tool, which provides over $1.1 million of property relief for Pickaway County’s senior citizens, disabled veterans, and other homestead recipients. The Ohio House of Representatives is committed to providing Ohioans property tax relief and I am grateful to work with the Pickaway County Board of Commissioners to achieve such meaningful local savings.”
The Local Option Homestead Tax Exemption is intended to offer targeted relief for senior citizens, disabled veterans, and other qualifying homeowners in Pickaway County.
