State Representative Tracy Richardson has introduced House Bill 261, aimed at providing increased property tax relief for seniors, disabled individuals, and eligible surviving spouses in Ohio. The bill seeks to expand the homestead exemption, which currently allows eligible homeowners to exempt up to $25,000 of their home’s market value from taxation.
“Our Ohio seniors and Ohioans with disabilities contribute to our communities in immense ways,” said Representative Richardson. “By expanding the homestead exemption, we can help alleviate the financial burden of property taxes, allowing Ohioans to remain in their homes and provide communities with dignity and security. Seniors need our help!”
The legislation is co-sponsored by Brian Lorenz (R-Powell) and proposes doubling the current exemption to $50,000. This change would apply to both real property taxes and manufactured home taxes while maintaining existing eligibility criteria such as age (65 or older), permanent disability, or being a qualifying surviving spouse.
House Bill 261 is pending a committee assignment.
