State Representative Tracy Richardson of Marysville has expressed her support for the Ohio House’s recent approval of the Human Trafficking Prevention Act. This legislation aims to increase criminal penalties for offenses related to human trafficking, kidnapping, and abduction.
Ohio ranks among the states with the highest number of reported human trafficking cases, with a significant portion involving sex trafficking. Under current Ohio law, individuals convicted of human trafficking face prison terms ranging from 10 to 15 years.
“This bill will send a strong message that Ohio will not tolerate Human Traffickers. If a Trafficker comes to Ohio, they can expect to be severely punished with maximum penalties that include life in prison,” said Richardson. “I fully support this bill with my pledge to do all that I can to combat Human Trafficking.”
The proposed Human Trafficking Prevention Act seeks to extend the penalties for human trafficking from a minimum of 10-15 years in prison to at least 15 years. Additionally, it introduces enhanced protections for victims under the age of 18 or those who are developmentally disabled by imposing sentences ranging from 25 years to life imprisonment.
House Bill 47 has passed through the House and is now set for further consideration by the Ohio Senate.
