State Representative Tracy Richardson (R-Marysville) has introduced the Expanding Human Trafficking Justice Act, a bill aimed at providing assistance to victims of human trafficking in reintegrating into society. The legislation seeks to expand the offenses eligible for expungement to include misdemeanors and certain felonies.

Currently, victims of human trafficking can have their records expunged for convicted crimes of soliciting, loitering, and prostitution. However, Richardson's proposed legislation aims to go further by allowing victims to have non-violent offenses expunged from their records. The bill requires individuals to provide clear and convincing evidence that their involvement in the offense was a direct result of their victimization.

In introducing the bill, Richardson emphasized the importance of providing hope and new beginnings to victims of human trafficking. She stated, "Victims of human trafficking are counting on the legislature. I believe in the promise of new life and new beginnings for those trapped in the despair of trafficking. This legislation brings hope."

The Expanding Human Trafficking Justice Act has garnered support from Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost. He expressed his support by highlighting the need to remove obstacles that prevent survivors from obtaining employment and secure housing. Yost stated, "Being a victim shouldn't come with lifelong consequences. We need to remove the obstacles that restrict survivors' ability to get a job and secure housing so they can create the fresh start they deserve."

State Representative Josh Williams (R-Sylvania) is co-sponsoring the legislation with Richardson. The bill has not yet been assigned to a House committee.

The introduction of the Expanding Human Trafficking Justice Act represents a significant step towards providing support and opportunities for victims of human trafficking. By expanding the offenses eligible for expungement, the legislation aims to remove lifelong barriers that hinder survivors' reintegration into society. With the support of key figures like Richardson and Yost, it is hoped that the bill will receive the necessary attention and consideration from the Ohio legislature.
